What This Apparatus Does
This apparatus lets students study mechanical friction between two solid bodies using three support friction surfaces (four different surface types in total) and two friction bodies, each with two different surfaces. A carriage driven by a cable pulley and motor moves the support friction surface at two selectable speeds via a graduated cable drum, while the friction body itself stays stationary, keeping the lines of action of friction force and tensile force always parallel. A height-adjustable force-measuring unit combines a force gauge with an adjustable air damper, so the mean friction force can be measured either with damping (undisturbed) or without damping, where slip-stick effects become measurable. A storage box houses the components.
