What This Apparatus Does
This apparatus demonstrates the transmissibility of fluid pressure, the working principle behind a hydraulic press. It consists of plated cylindrical tubes of different diameters, each fitted with a piston, and connected to each other through a tube at their bottom. Each piston has a circular disc at the top for loading masses, and the whole apparatus is mounted on a base. Loading a mass on the smaller piston and observing the effect on the larger piston shows how a small force applied over a small area can be transmitted through a fluid to produce a much larger force over a larger area.
