What This Instrument Does
This rheostat is built in a variety of resistance values and current-carrying capacities to suit different laboratory needs. It is made from a special insulating porcelain tube, 4.4cm or 5.6cm in diameter, wound with heavily oxidised eureka wire to the length needed for the required resistance. The tube is mounted on heavy, powder-coated aluminium feet with a rod and brass nuts for durability, and the sliding contact runs on a brass guide rod tightened with a brass screw, with the slider itself fitted with a phosphorous bronze brush contact for smooth, double-contact movement.
Dual Use as Rheostat or Potentiometer
Three lock-type brass socket terminals, each properly insulated, are provided. One terminal connects to the sliding contact, while the other two connect to the ends of the winding, allowing the same instrument to be used either as a rheostat or as a potentiometer depending on how it is wired into the circuit. The total resistance and maximum current capacity are clearly marked on the slider for quick reference.
