What This Apparatus Does
This apparatus measures penetration — the distance in millimetres that a standard needle penetrates vertically into a sample under a fixed load — on a wide variety of materials including grease, petroleum, bitumen, tar, wax, polish, foodstuffs, rubber asphalts and pharmaceutical creams. A rack-and-pinion and pointer assembly provides fine adjustment of the needle tip to the sample, with a slipping-clutch mechanism for accurate reading and easy resetting between samples. The dial is graduated from 0-400 in tenth-millimetre subdivisions, the head support is mounted on a height-adjustable vertical rod, and the apparatus is supplied with two sample containers made of aluminium.
