What This Apparatus Does

This apparatus demonstrates capacitive-principle level measurement using a transparent acrylic main tank whose water level is to be measured. Two of the tank's facing walls are fitted with metal plates on their inside faces; with the tank empty, these two plates plus the air between them form a capacitor, and as water fills the tank the changing dielectric between the plates changes the measured capacitance, which corresponds to the water level. A linear scale fitted on the tank gives a visual reference reading (max reading height 100mm) to check against the capacitive measurement, displayed on a digital indicator (least count 1mm, 3½ digit) in a powder-coated enclosure.
