What This Apparatus Demonstrates
This electroscope consists of an insulated, chrome-plated brass pillar and hook mounted on a wooden base, with two pith ball spheres suspended on unspun silk threads. It is used for demonstrating the attraction and repulsion of electric charges: when a charged object is brought near the pith balls, they show the charge by moving apart or towards each other.
