What This Apparatus Demonstrates
This apparatus demonstrates the effect of electric discharge from points. It has a 60mm diameter, six-pointed star wheel with all points curved in the same direction, mounted so it rotates freely on a pivot point on a short stand. The stand is provided with a 4mm connection socket on its round base, ready for connection to a high-voltage supply.

Typical Use
School and college physics laboratories use the Electric Whirl to demonstrate point discharge: when the wheel is connected to a high-voltage supply, the charge escaping from the curved points causes the wheel to spin, showing the reaction effect of electric discharge from a sharp point.
